A wonderful piece of Spanish culinary history, This vintage hand-painted pottery pitcher was created for Restaurante Sobrino de Botín, the celebrated Madrid restaurant traditionally dating to 1725 and recognized as the world’s oldest continuously operating restaurant. The front bears the restaurant’s historic name and address: Antigua Casa Sobrino de Botín, Calle de Cuchilleros 17, Madrid. The opposite side features a wonderfully expressive Spanish horseman surrounded by loose green, yellow, blue and black brushwork. Signed “Santafe Puente Arzobispo” underneath, the pitcher was made in El Puente del Arzobispo, Toledo—one of Spain’s historic centers of hand-painted glazed earthenware. Its irregular form, visible brushwork and glaze variations give it the unmistakable character of traditional Spanish folk pottery. This would make a striking decorative pitcher, vase or display piece in a Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, European farmhouse or collected kitchen interior. Vintage condition with rustic manufacturing irregularities and areas of glaze loss/chipping, particularly around the green rim and handle.
