The text outlines a Landmarkist perspective of Baptist history. It claims an unbroken historical succession of local churches practicing Baptist doctrines from the time of Jesus Christ down through the centuries. While first issued right after Carroll's death in 1931, it has been continually kept in print by various publishers. The core premise is that Baptist churches did not emerge out of the 16th-century Protestant Reformation. Instead, Carroll argues they existed independently from the apostolic era onward under different regional names (such as Waldensians, Albigenses, and Anabaptists).
