Antique French-language edition of Le Koran, translated from Arabic and accompanied by notes, preceded by an abridged Life of Mahomet, drawn from respected Oriental writers by M. Savary (Claude-Étienne Savary). Published in Paris by Librairie Garnier Frères. Attractive period half-leather binding with marbled-paper boards and marbled endpapers, raised bands and gilt decoration to the spine. Substantial early French edition of the Qur’an with wonderful shelf presence. Binding shows considerable age-related rubbing and wear, especially at the spine and extremities; please see photos. Savary’s French translation is historically important: his Le Coran originally appeared in the 18th century, so this is a later edition of that famous translation, not an 18th-century first edition.
