Product Details

This is an antique paneled amethyst glass "Dawson's Pickles" bottle dating from the late 1890s to the 1910s. The bottle features a distinct light-purple hue, commonly called antique amethyst glass. The bright neon-green glow under ultraviolet (UV) light indicates it contains manganese or a slight mix of uranium, which was added by glass manufacturers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to clear out the natural green tints of iron impurities. Over time, sunlight turns this manganese glass purple. During the late Victorian era and early 1900s, commercial pickling companies sprouted across North America. Instead of flat sides, they used multi-paneled fluted styles to catch the light on store shelves and make the green pickles inside look more appealing to shoppers. There is some light cloudiness and some darker discoloration and wear marks on the bottle in some spots as seen in photos.
