The Century Atlas of the World, prepared under the superintendence of Benjamin E. Smith and published by The Century Co., New York, 1902. This is Volume X of The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia. Bibliographic records for the 1902 edition confirm 118 maps and approximately 401 pages of additional material/index. Large-format atlas measuring approximately 12 × 9 inches, bound in three-quarter leather with leather spine and corners and gilt spine lettering and decoration. Features 118 detailed color maps, approximately 11 × 15 inches when opened, mounted/bound with linen tape at the center folds. Maps cover the United States, individual states and regions, Europe, Asia, the Philippines, Hawaii, and other parts of the world. The maps also contain period details such as railroads, cities, political boundaries, transportation routes, and geographic features. Contemporary reference sources specifically noted the atlas for details, including steamship routes, cable lines, explorers' routes, and dated battlefields. The photographs show particularly interesting period maps of the United States, Massachusetts and Rhode Island with a Boston inset, France with a Paris inset, and the Philippine Islands and Hawaii with Honolulu and Pearl Harbor. Published at an especially interesting point in American history, the Philippine/Hawaii map reflects the geography of the United States' newly expanded Pacific presence around the turn of the 20th century.
