George Washington “Washington Before Boston” / Comitia Americana bronze medal featuring the famous design commemorating the evacuation of Boston on March 17, 1776. This is a large, full-size example measuring approximately 68 mm in diameter, approximately 4–4.5 mm thick, and weighing approximately 135 grams. The obverse features a detailed bust of George Washington surrounded by the Latin inscription: GEORGIO WASHINGTON SVPREMO DVCI EXERCITVVM ADSERTORI LIBERTATIS COMITIA AMERICANA The reverse depicts Washington and his officers on horseback overlooking Boston, with cannon and cannonballs in the foreground. The reverse includes the DUVIV. signature associated with engraver Benjamin Duvivier and the inscription: HOSTIBUS PRIMO FUGATIS BOSTONIUM RECUPERATUM XVII MARTII MDCCLXXVI The medal has a plain edge and an attractive aged bronze/golden-bronze appearance. Based on the size, plain edge and die characteristics, this appears consistent with a later full-size U.S. Mint Washington Before Boston restrike/copy-die issue. It is not being represented as an original circa-1790 Paris Mint medal. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition and attribution. Surface shows age-related toning, spots, light marks and handling consistent with an older medal. Strong portrait and reverse detail remain.
