The background is dominated by a Spanish-built coastal fortification and a Spanish galleon out at sea. The Spanish discovery and settlement of Florida began in 1513 when Juan Ponce de León first explored the peninsula, allegedly searching for the Fountain of Youth. Spain established its first successful settlement at St. Augustine in 1565 under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, making it the oldest continuously inhabited European-established city in the continental United States. St. Augustine served as a strategic military outpost and missionary center, allowing Spain to protect its treasure fleets along the Florida coast.
