Pax, the Roman goddess and allegorical personification of peace, is one of the most ancient and enduring figures in the Western artistic and numismatic tradition, her origins in the Roman imperial period when Augustus established the Ara Pacis, the Altar of Peace, as a monument to the golden age of prosperity and stability his reign had brought to a world exhausted by decades of civil war. Depicted classically as a serene, graceful woman bearing an olive branch, a cornucopia of abundance, and occasionally a torch or staff. The waters of Molasses Reef possess a clarity and luminosity that transforms every dive into an experience of almost surreal beauty, sunlight penetrating the shallow tropical water to illuminate the coral formations in shifting patterns of gold and blue that make the reef’s extraordinary inhabitants appear to glow from within.
