1857 Seated Liberty Half Philadelphia. No mint mark. No arrows. Raw. Grade: XF details, light wipe. Sharp 1857. Stars up. Shield lines and gown folds there. Eagle has feather. Fields a little bright — old wipe, not a harsh scour. Call it XF details. .900 silver. 12.44 g. ASW 0.360 oz. Mintage 1,988,000. Obv: Seated Liberty, cap and pole, 1857. Rev: Eagle, shield, HALF DOL. 1857: Panic of 1857 — banks break, railroads fail, gold from California can’t paper over it. Dred Scott. Buchanan sworn in. Months later the Central America goes down with a fortune in gold. This half was in a till the year the boom cracked. Same type as the 1856, one year deeper into the crash.
