Nick and his sons return from a hunting trip to find their small Wisconsin town eerily abandoned. A government attempt to eliminate a tent-worm infestation has gone catastrophically wrong, unleashing deadly biting flies that spread disease through animals and humans. With winter forcing the insects into hibernation, Nick's family shelters in place, rationing supplies and waiting to see whether the cold will end the outbreak—or whether spring will bring the threat roaring back. As isolation, grief, and dwindling resources take their toll, survival becomes a matter of protecting the family from dangers both outside and within.
