The story follows Graham Merrill (played by Bill Travers), a frustrated London civil servant who feels trapped by the monotony of city life. One day, he spots a lively, captive Mijbil (Mij) the otter in a pet shop window and makes an impulsive decision to buy him.After quickly realizing that his cramped London apartment is entirely unsuitable for a growing otter, Graham abandons his city job and moves to a remote, rundown coastal cottage in the Scottish Highlands. There, he adapts to a peaceful, isolated lifestyle completely dedicated to looking after Mij.While exploring his new surroundings, Graham meets Mary MacKenzie (Virginia McKenna), a local doctor, and her dog. Mary helps Graham settle in and care for Mij, leading to a close friendship and a deep bond over their shared love for the local wildlife.
