Wonderful antique blue and white spongeware crock lid, likely dating to the 19th century, with bold cobalt blue sponge decoration over a creamy white ground. This substantial pottery lid has a domed profile, molded central handle, raised concentric detailing, and an expressive hand-applied sponge pattern that gives it the unmistakable primitive country look collectors love. This is a lid only, making it an excellent replacement piece for an antique spongeware crock, covered jar, biscuit jar, storage crock, or other early stoneware vessel with compatible measurements. It also displays beautifully on its own as part of a collection of antique spongeware, spatterware, primitive crocks, early stoneware, blue and white pottery, ironstone, yellowware, or country kitchen antiques. The underside shows an unglazed foot/contact ring along with a faint impressed circular mark, although the maker is not clear enough from the photos for a confident attribution. The blue decoration has wonderful irregularity, drips, pooling, and glaze variation consistent with hand-decorated antique pottery. Condition is consistent with significant age and includes glaze wear, staining, firing irregularities, surface marks, discoloration, edge wear, and visible age around the handle area. There appears to be a possible old hairline or repair near the knob/handle, so please review all photographs carefully for exact condition before bidding.
