This volume comes from the monumental Messages and Papers of the Presidents, a multi-volume documentary history built around presidential messages, proclamations, official papers, and other major records of the American presidency. Volume XIX is the first half of the encyclopedic index, covering A–K and organizing major people, events, policies, and subjects connected to the presidential papers into an accessible historical reference. The larger work was prepared under the direction of the Joint Committee on Printing of the House and Senate and became an important documentary source for American political and presidential history. This 1927 Bureau of National Literature edition is especially attractive, with black textured boards, extensive gilt decoration, and the presidential seal stamped prominently on the front cover. It has the look of a substantial early-20th-century presidential reference volume and displays extremely well.
