A deep purple, mulberry-toned transferware dinner plate in the Morea pattern: classical ruins with a statue atop a column, a village and hills beyond, cattle and sheep resting in the foreground, and a lush rococo border of roses, scrolls and beaded edge on a fourteen-sided scalloped rim. | SPECS: Approx 10 in diameter, scalloped fourteen-sided rim. Maker: unmarked Staffordshire, c.1840s. Pattern: Morea, printed on the base with Stone China body mark. | HISTORY: Morea is the old name for the Peloponnese, and the pattern belongs to the 1840s craze for Greek and classical ruin views. It was made in blue, pink and this scarcer purple, on the heavy stone china body that Staffordshire potters marketed as the tough, everyday rival to porcelain. Purple and mulberry were produced in far smaller quantities than blue, which is why a plate this size in this colour draws a collector crowd. | CONDITION: Honest all-over crazing on both sides. Small brown spots and scatter
