Product Details

Soft aqua and gilt, very Edwardian. A Johnson Brothers covered vegetable dish with a scalloped oval bowl, moulded leaf handles, a domed lid with a ring finial, and a delicate pale aqua transfer of rose sprays and rococo scrolls with gilt tracing over the top. | SPECS: Approx 11.5 in handle to handle, approx 6 in tall with lid. Maker: Johnson Brothers, Hanley, Staffordshire, c.1891-1913. Pattern: pale aqua floral scroll with gilt, unnamed on the mark. | HISTORY: Johnson Brothers built their name on Royal Semi-Porcelain, the light, white, hard-wearing body they sold by the boatload to America from the 1890s, and covered vegetable dishes like this were the workhorses of the Sunday table. The crown-and-ribbon mark with England and no Made in England dates it to the pre-First World War years. | CONDITION: Heavy all-over crazing, a chip to the edge of the lid rim, gilt worn on the scrolls and handles, brown staining to the lid rim and foot on the reverse.
