Dated to the day. A tiny deep mulberry-black transferware dish with a Rhineland castle and towers at the well, a fringe of leaves, and a dense damask border of floral diamonds and scrolls, all under the warmest toasty crazing you could ask for. The registry diamond on the base pins the design to May 1849. | SPECS: Approx 4.75 in diameter, twelve-sided rim. Maker: unmarked Staffordshire, design registered 24 May 1849, made c.1849-1850s. Pattern: castle and tower scene, unnamed. | HISTORY: The diamond registry mark was the Victorian design patent: potters registered a new pattern with the Board of Trade to stop rivals copying it for three years, and the letters and numbers in the lozenge spell out the exact date. Mulberry and black were printed in far smaller runs than blue, which is why small pieces in these colours are hunted for butter pat walls and cabinet shelves. | CONDITION: Heavy all-over crazing with warm brown staining in the well and across the border, a small glaze flake at t
