Product Details

Teal green and very English. A deep rimmed soup plate in the Old Castle pattern: a Gothic church tower and abbey among trees with a palm, a tiny couple on the path and a fence running down to the water, framed by a wide scalloped border of full-blown peonies, roses and trailing foliage on a sheet-green ground. | SPECS: Approx 10.5 in diameter, scalloped rim, deep well. Maker: confirm, W in a diamond mark with England, c.1891-1910s. Pattern: Old Castle, printed on the base. | HISTORY: The abbey-and-palm view is pure Romantic Staffordshire, a 1830s idea reissued by later Victorian potters for the export market once the England mark came in after 1891. Green sheet-pattern borders like this were made for the American trade and turn up far less often than blue or brown. | CONDITION: Fine crazing front and back, a few dark specks in the print at the left of the scene, light utensil wear in the well. No chips or cracks noted; tap test pending. Sold as found, please review every photo.
