Product Details

Flow blue with the trimmings. A scalloped plate with a ribbon-twist edge, a lattice-and-scroll border blurred in that soft flowing cobalt, rust-red flowers and gilt scrolls picked out over the top, and a small floral medallion at the centre. The registration number on the base dates the design to 1899. | SPECS: Approx 9 in diameter, scalloped rim. Maker: Wood and Son, Burslem, Staffordshire, design registered 1899, made c.1899-1910. Pattern: lattice and scroll floral border, unnamed on the mark. | HISTORY: Wood and Son made some of the prettiest late flow blue, printed in a soft lavender-toned cobalt on their Royal Semi-Porcelain body and finished with clobbered rust flowers and gilt for the American market. The blurring is the point: cobalt was made to flow into the glaze on purpose, and collectors grade it by how dreamily it melts. | CONDITION: Fine all-over crazing, gilt lightly worn, small blue kiln flecks and a red painter's mark on the reverse, faint wear to the well.
