Product Details

A leaf pressed into lavender. Victorian majolica butter pat with a raised maple leaf in mottled greens laid over a soft lilac ground that runs pinker at the rim, the whole thing under a fine crackle glaze. The lilac-and-green pairing is the one majolica collectors go looking for. | SPECS: Approx 3 to 3.25 in diameter (confirm), round with a moulded leaf. Maker: an impressed monogram on the base is present but too soft to read, so no maker is claimed; est. c.1880-1900 by style. Pattern: leaf on plate, majolica glaze. | HISTORY: Leaf-on-plate butter pats were the everyday end of the great Victorian majolica craze, made in Staffordshire, Pennsylvania and Germany alike, and the lilac ground versions were always the scarcer colourway next to the plain greens. Small enough for a butter pat wall, pretty enough to hold a ring. | CONDITION: All-over crazing, warm and toasty, a few glaze pops and a small area of glaze wear on the front, rim glaze rubbed in places, light staining and kiln grit on
