Hand forged by my husband on a home forge using tongs, hammer and anvil used by my paternal great-grandfather. The blacksmithing tools were forged by ggf in the early 1900s. The bell begins as a flat 8" metal round. It is put into the refiners fire until it reaches a red glow. It is then taken to the anvil where is it repeatedly hammered reheated and hammered some more until it has formed the desired bell shape. When it is just right the blacksmith will quench the hammered metal in water. A 2 " ball bearing will have been added at just the right time. The bell is now ready to be burnished with gold leafing.
