The story behind these is linked to the historical glass factory that operated in the area. In Conneaut, Ohio, General Electric had a lamp base plant that produced black Vitrite insulators for light bulbs for almost 70 years, from 1941 to 2008. Slag is a glassy by-product of industrial processes, like glass manufacturing. Over time, these pieces of slag have made their way to the beach and been tumbled and smoothed by the LAKE ERIE's waves, resulting in the distinct dark colors, including the purple or black. The exceedingly rare dark purple Beach Glass at Conneaut,Ohio Beaches comes from the retired General Electric plant. Look at the base of a regular light bulb, near the screw-in area. See that dark glass..Thats it. At the end of a shift, the cold glass was taken and dumped directly into lake Erie !!!
