1971 a 1978. 5 Pesos Mexicanos featuring Vicente Guerrero. (1782 – 14 February 1831) was a Mexican military officer from 1810–1821 and a statesman who became the nation's second president in 1829. He was one of the leading generals who fought against Spain during the Mexican War of Independence. According to historian Theodore G. Vincent, Vicente Guerrero lived alongside indigenous in Tlaltelulco and had the ability to speak Spanish and the languages of the Indigenous. Vicente Guerrero, the 2nd President of Mexico who was described as a “Mixed person of Indigenous, & Black ancestry”, As President he abolished slavery in Mexico in 1829. Mexico officially abolished slavery in 1829. The decision, known as the Guerrero Decree, was enacted by President Vicente Guerrero. However, this decree did not fully end slavery, as it initially exempted the region of Tejas (modern-day Texas). A more comprehensive ban on slavery across Mexico was later passed in 1837.
