Authentic late-19th-century Enterprise No. 50 sad iron manufactured by the Enterprise Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia. This heavy cast-iron clothes iron features its period detachable wooden “cold handle,” secured by the center sliding latch and wooden knob. Marked “Enterprise Iron Pat. May 24, ’70.” The removable handle allowed the iron base to be heated on a stove and then safely attached for pressing clothing—a clever improvement over earlier irons with handles that became dangerously hot.
