Facts & History Historical Significance: Designed by James B. Longacre, the Two-Cent series (minted from 1864 to 1873) holds a unique spot in American history as the first U.S. coin to feature the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST". The 1866 Mintage: The Philadelphia Mint struck 3,177,000 of these bronze coins in 1866. This was a steep drop from the tens of millions made during the peak of the Civil War, making them moderately tougher to find today in higher grades.
