Struck in the imperial capital during the reign of Maurice Tiberius, a soldier-emperor who rose through the military ranks to the purple, stabilized Rome’s eastern frontier against Persia, and campaigned hard against the Avars & Slavs in the Balkans before a mutiny of his own army brought his reign to a brutal end in 602 A.D.
