Softcover ©2008 - Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney is a middle-grade humorous graphic novel (also classified as realistic fiction and comedy) that follows the second-year middle school experiences of Greg Heffley. The plot centers on Greg’s struggle to keep a humiliating secret from the previous summer hidden from the entire school, a secret that only his older brother and "expert tormentor," Rodrick Heffley, knows. While navigating typical middle school hazards like popularity, crushes, and the school talent show, Greg is constantly blackmailed by Rodrick, who leverages the incident to force Greg into doing his bidding. The story also explores Greg’s dysfunctional family dynamics, including his rivalry with Rodrick’s band, Löded Diper, and his annoyance with his tattletale younger brother, Manny.
