Stunning and rare Emma Meléndez vintage 925 earrings Aztec / Mayan. Screw back (not pierced) . 20g of silver, stamped with her signature and all symbols regarding Taxco Mexico. 20g pure silver. screwback (not pierced) sturdy and work fine. The Maker: EMMA represents Emma Meléndez, a prominent, highly respected silversmith and shop owner who opened her studio (taller) and storefront in Taxco, Mexico in 1953. Silver Lineage: Emma was the niece of Rafael Meléndez, one of the original and most famous master apprentices to William Spratling (the American architect credited with reviving the silver industry in Taxco). Design Style: Her workshop became renowned for blending traditional Aztec and Mayan motifs with smooth, heavy Mid-Century Modernist forms. The small silhouette stamped at the top with the number 83 inside is an official Mexican government assay stamp. Used between 1948 and 1979/1980, the Eagle mark guaranteed the piece was genuine silver and met government quality standards.
