Product Details

A beautiful piece of late-Victorian / early-Edwardian English transferware — the Adams "MAZARA" pattern, named after the Sicilian fishing port of Mazara del Vallo. Romantic Italian scene at center: figures crossing a stone bridge, a bell-towered villa, mountains, palm trees, all in soft printed blue. Wave-and-scroll patterned border in two zones with delicate gilt accents. SPECS • Approximate diameter: ~9-10" • Pattern: Mazara by W. Adams & Sons • Backstamp: Crown-and-laurel cartouche "W. ADAMS & Co / MAZARA / ENGLAND" in blue • Date: c.1910–1920 (Tunstall mark) The "Mazara" pattern is named after Mazara del Vallo, a fishing port and comune in southwestern Sicily founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC, today one of the most important fishing centers in Italy.
