It forms when silica-rich water fills cavities in volcanic rock and gradually solidifies as the water content changes. Its color and play-of-color are caused by the diffraction of light through microscopic silica spheres within the structure. Ethiopian opal typically shows a translucent to transparent body with shifting color patterns and may display internal fractures or natural inclusions.
