Product Details

Demetrios II Nicator seized the Seleucid throne in 145 BC with the backing of Ptolemy VI Philometor of Egypt, whose daughter Cleopatra Thea he married, an alliance that lends this portrait its Ptolemaic-influenced style. Captured by the Parthians in 138 BC & held prisoner for roughly a decade, he was eventually released & resumed the throne from 129 until his death in 125 BC, ruling a kingdom increasingly fractured by dynastic rivals & shrinking borders.
