Product Details

A remarkable piece of late 19th-century American pressed glass, this antique bread plate was produced by Adams & Co. circa 1882 in the EAPG “Egyptian,” also known as the “Sphinx,” pattern. Created during the Victorian fascination with Egyptian Revival design, the plate features an elaborate relief portrait of Cleopatra surrounded by Egyptian-inspired architecture, palm trees, and richly detailed ornamental motifs. Encircling the central scene is the raised inscription, “Give us this day our daily bread,” a traditional sentiment frequently associated with Victorian bread plates and tableware. The unusual shaped border, intricate pressed decoration, and highly detailed figural scene make this an exceptional example of Early American Pattern Glass. More than a functional serving piece, it offers a wonderful glimpse into the Egyptomania that influenced decorative arts during the late Victorian era.
