This is an antique stoneware jam / preserve pot with original wire wire bail handle (c. late 19th century). Manufactured for H. A. Johnson & Co. of Boston, Mass., this salt-glazed earthenware pail features crisp black stenciled advertising graphics within a rectangular border reading: "EXCELSIOR PURE PRESERVES / MANUFACTURED BY / H. A. JOHNSON & CO. / BOSTON, MASS." The crock includes side ears holding its original bent wire bail handle fitted with a turned black wooden grip. The piece stands approximately 5 inches tall. Condition note: The crock exhibits a significant rim chip along the top inner lip, alongside typical light glaze crazing, staining, and kiln marks consistent with age and primitive utility wear.
