Large vintage Soviet porcelain figural group known as “The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep” (Пастушка и трубочист), produced by the Kyiv Experimental Ceramics and Art Factory (КЭКХЗ), Ukrainian SSR. ‼️tiny chip on green hat The composition depicts the characters from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep, seated back-to-back atop a brick chimney. Exceptionally detailed polychrome decoration includes the shepherdess in a floral gown and bonnet and the chimney sweep in a green top hat, striped trousers and work gear. The model is associated with Ukrainian porcelain artists Oksana Zhnikrup and Vladislav Shcherbina and dates to the Soviet period. An example of this model has been specifically cataloged by an auction house as 1978, making this a fine example of 1970s Kyiv art porcelain.
