Charming and sentimental 1940s World War II–era sweetheart brooch and photo locket, featuring a colorful enamel songbird perched upon a leafy golden branch with a dangling heart-shaped locket below. The songbird is beautifully detailed in soft cream, pink and red enamel, surrounded by hand-painted green leaves. Suspended beneath the branch is a substantial gold-filled heart locket, creating a wonderful articulated design with movement. Open the heart to reveal the most special feature: an original period sweetheart photograph still preserved inside. During WWII, sentimental jewelry such as lockets, sweetheart pins and photograph jewelry provided a deeply personal connection between servicemen and the loved ones waiting for them at home. The surviving photograph gives this piece an especially evocative piece of personal history. The reverse retains its period pin and safety clasp construction, consistent with the 1940s era.
