Product Details

Lot of 2 antique original portrait study sheets, likely late 19th to early 20th century, executed in pencil/graphite on paper. The larger sheet shows a full-figure side profile of the deputy clerk seated at a drafting desk on a four-legged Victorian swivel stool, holding a stylus or pen. It is inscribed “The Ely Deputy Clerk” and “from life,” with uncertain artist initials (JRM or JWM?). The smaller sheet has a portrait labeled “Deputy Clerk Ely” and a second profile sketch on the reverse. “Ely” may be a surname or location (possibly Ely, Minnesota); the sitter and artist remain unidentified. The larger sheet bears a verified CRANES paper watermark. The larger sheet measures approximately 9.75" x 5.75" and the smaller one approximately 3" x 2.75". An unusual occupational portrait and historical art study. Both drawings are antique originals showing age-related wear consistent with old works on paper. The sheets have overall toning, scattered spotting/foxing, staining, minor creases and handling wear. The smaller piece has remnants from previous mounting on the reverse, and the larger sheet shows discoloration/staining on the back. See pictures for further details on condition.
