Antique German 1/2-liter stoneware beer stein with hinged pewter lid, believed to date to the early 20th century / World War I era. The pewter lid bears an old German-script presentation or remembrance inscription referring to the "Lazarett Bechhofen." The inscription appears to include "Erinnerung a. d. Lazarett Bechhofen," referring to a remembrance or souvenir associated with the hospital/infirmary at Bechhofen. The stein features a pale gray-blue glazed body with dark green horizontal bands and distinctive brown circular relief decoration. A hand-incised "1/2 L." capacity mark appears near the upper handle area. The underside bears two impressed pottery marks: a clearly visible capital "E" and a second, partially legible impressed emblem/mark. The exact manufacturer has not been positively identified. Hinged pewter lid and thumb lift are intact and operational. Lid shows age-related oxidation, patina, scratches and wear consistent with an antique piece. Stoneware shows age-related crazing, surface wear and manufacturing irregularities. Please review all photographs closely for condition and markings. Approximately 4 inches tall to the top of the lid, excluding the raised thumb lift. An unusual early German stein with a particularly interesting period inscription connecting it to Bechhofen and a Lazarett rather than the much more common decorative or tourist steins.
