Product Details

An evocative Edwardian-era portrait of a young boy, transferred onto a smooth black lacquered (japanned) wooden panel. The child is dressed in a tunic and leggings, posed with a studio chair, a common prop of the period. This process involved adhering a photographic print directly to a lacquered wood surface, then sealing it under varnish for a glossy, durable finish. Popular from the 1880s to the 1920s, japanned panels were used both for formal studio portraits and for memorial keepsakes. The deep black lacquer was especially favored in mourning traditions, and it’s possible this panel was created posthumously from an earlier photograph of the child. Details: • Date: circa 1905–1915 • Medium: photographic transfer on japanned (black lacquered) wood • Dimensions: [6x 4.5] • Condition: Image has warm sepia tones and some light surface wear consistent with age;
