It doesn’t matter what time I open Whatnot. He’s already there. Waiting. Somehow the exact card I’ve been looking for is sitting on the screen before I even type in chat.
Last week I turned my phone off.

I started hearing, “Going once… going twice…” from rooms where there wasn’t even a speaker.

I’m starting to think Chris isn’t actually a person… he’s just a cryptid that lives inside the Whatnot app waiting for me to open it.
Every time I say, “I’m only buying one card tonight,” somehow Chris is already there… smiling… with exactly the card I didn’t know I needed. It’s unsettling.
The deals are almost suspiciously good, the inventory never seems to run out, and my wallet has developed a fear response every time I get the “Chris is live” notification. I’ve accepted that resistance is futile.
