The jackets are magnificent. Real leather. Beautiful. Heavy with the permanence of something once alive, transformed into something meant to outlast us. My wife was thrilled.
John owed us nothing beyond what I purchased. Yet from the darkness came an unnecessary act of generosity.
Someday these jackets will hang in a closet without us. Someone may wonder who wore them. Our names will mean nothing.
