A character that needs no introduction, yet he has heralds all the same...what started out as a simple commission request for Galactus as a token for the Magic: the Gathering card, "The Coming of Galactus" that pays off with a huge 16/16 creature. I wanted something that shows that scale, and how imposing that is. Ian is known for his portraits, but this card is a masterpiece of a landscape. (You can see it yourself on his IG, and I truly recommend you do if you ever thought about snagging a commission, but haven't yet.) We have beautiful ice capped mountains, with the looming figure of Galactus appearing from the shadows dwarfing them in comparison. Upon the nearby frozen tundra stands Dr. Doom, ready to face this incredible threat all on his own. Afterall, "You don't need to be a superhero to get the girl, the right girl will bring out the hero in you", and Doom here seems to making good. While the older folks will instantly know this book, it was from a time if you died in a comic book, you were pretty much dead. No takebacks, do overs, or mulligans. We all know Supes is alive, and kicking so why even bring this up? Well that's because Ian masterfully recreated the cover of that book on a 2.5x3.5 inch piece of cardboard. It's absolutely gorgeous, evoking the raw emotion of seeing that cover as if for the first time again when I opened the package. This card really is a testament to his skill as an artist. Drawing that small is no easy feat as it is...but the whole cover?! From the fire escape railings on the brick buildings to the shattered glass windows...to the tie blowing in the wind from the man standing near the door on the far left to the remnants of his cape, turned into a flag. It's all here, and then some. It really is a masterpiece that I hope everyone can see. Truly above and beyond, thanks again Ian. Seriously!Thank you! This review leaves me speechless but empowered.
