The wrapping shimmered with the ambition of kings undone, and the air itself grew heavy with velvet doom. Never before have I witnessed cardboard carry such theatrical sorrow and five-star fashion.
Each card lay within the box as though placed there by trembling hands beneath candlelight. Their glossy surfaces caught the moon in wicked angles, glimmering like jeweled daggers before a banquet of betrayal. I dared shuffle them once and heard, faintly, the sound of distant thunder and somebody regretting everything immensely.
The craftsmanship was stitched together with the confidence of a noble house moments before collapse. Sharp edges, rich colors, and an elegance so dramatic that my curtains began swaying despite the windows being shut. One card alone possessed such dreadful majesty that my teacup tipped itself over in respect.
