Struck during the Genroku era of the Tokugawa Shogunate under Shogun Tsunayoshi & during the reign of Emperor Higashiyama (1687–1709), this irregular bean-shaped silver piece bears large characters & smaller surrounding marks reading Genroku Joze. Genroku-period Japan is remembered for flourishing urban culture, economic growth, & artistic expansion, though the era also saw repeated debasements of the silver coinage.
