A beautiful two piece excavated (dug up) Civil War Confederate Staff Officers coat button. Most of the original gold gilding is present, and the buttons face (front) is pushed in and slightly flattened as opposed to it's original domed shape. This button was manufactured in England and was sold to the Confederacy and smuggled through the US naval blockade of southern ports. The backmark is "Extra Rich Treble Gilt", and the loop is bent over, but intact. A beautiful piece of history from a pivotal war in American History! It is about quarter sized. Provenance uncertain. The small plastic display is included.
