Product Details

Offered here is a U.S. Mint pewter reproduction medal from the America’s First Medals series, honoring General Anthony Wayne and the Revolutionary War assault on Stony Point, July 15, 1779. The obverse reads “ANTONIO WAYNE DUCI EXERCITUS / COMITIA AMERICANA” and shows America presenting a laurel wreath to General Wayne. The reverse reads “STONY/STONEY-POINT EXPUGNATUM / XV JUL. MDCCLXXIX”, meaning Stony Point was taken by storm on July 15, 1779. The original medal design is attributed to Nicolas-Marie Gatteaux, and the medal commemorates Wayne’s successful night attack at Stony Point. 1976 pewter U.S. Mint reproduction, not an original 1779 medal. Numista lists this type as pewter, 38 mm, 20.7 g, from the America’s First Medals series.
