Product Details

Genuine Aesthetic Movement transferware, over 140 years old. Powell Bishop and Stonier rim soup bowls in the May pattern, brown transfer hand-colored in the clobbered style with blossoming branches, butterflies, and a bird on the warm ivory body. SPECS: approx 9 in diameter, scalloped rim with rust-red edge line, weight approx 1 lb each, Powell Bishop and Stonier Oriental Ivory mark with registry diamond. HISTORY: Powell Bishop and Stonier of Hanley Staffordshire were leading Aesthetic-period potters working the Japonisme craze of the 1880s. Oriental Ivory was their warm ivory earthenware body and clobbering was the hand-painting of color over a printed brown outline. The firm became Bishop and Stonier Bisto in 1891, dating this pair to circa 1880 to 1885.
