Indian Tree, the pattern that would not die. A small saucer by Johnson Brothers of England: the crooked flowering branch, cabbage roses in crimson and pink, jade and turquoise leaves, all fenced in by that unmistakable dark Greek-key and fretwork border. Hand-colored over the printed outline, so the pinks sit slightly proud of their lines. | SPECS: Saucer, approx 5.5 inches diameter (confirm). White earthenware, printed outline with polychrome hand-applied color. Weight not yet measured. BACKSTAMP: crown device above Johnson Bros England, with INDIAN TREE arched above, plus a hand-painted green decorator's mark. Maker confirmed from the mark on this piece. HISTORY: Indian Tree was introduced around 1800 and then made by nearly every English pottery that could hold a copperplate - Coalport, Spode, Maddock, Johnson Bros, and a long list of others - which is why an unmarked example tells you nothing at all.
