Product Details

Wedgwood Sage Green Jasperware 1972 Mother's Day Annual Plate — "The Sewing Lesson" — the second piece in Wedgwood's beloved annual Mother's Day series, in the soft sage (olive) green jasperware that pairs beautifully with cottage decor and pink/red transferware. Central scene: a young mother teaching her daughter to sew under a tree, with a delicate laurel/leaf wreath border framing the whole. The cartouche at the bottom reads "Mother 1972" so this is also a perfect 1972 birth-year, anniversary, or first-baby gift piece. SPECS: • Approximate diameter: 6.5" (standard annual plate size) • Sage green-dipped jasperware with applied white sprigged relief • Pattern: Mother and child ("The Sewing Lesson") with laurel wreath border • Backstamp: WEDGWOOD / MADE IN ENGLAND / 72 (impressed; '72' = 1972 year code) HISTORY: Wedgwood launched its annual Mother's Day plate series in 1971 — this 1972 plate was the second in the series. Each year features a different mother-and-child scene drawn from the same neoclassical vocabulary that John Flaxman Jr. helped establish for Wedgwood in the 1770s–80s. The post-1929 Wedgwood dating system uses the last two digits of the year as the date code, so "72" reads as 1972 directly. Sage green is one of three classic Wedgwood jasper colors (alongside cobalt and pale blue). CONDITION: Excellent display condition. Strong sage green color, crisp white relief detail (no smearing or flaking on the figures or the laurel wreath), backstamp clearly impressed and legible. Standard age-appropriate wear.
