Large Pre-Columbian Veracruz "Sonriente" Head Fragment Classic Veracruz, Mexico, ca. 600-900 AD 6 3/4 x 7 1/2 in. Large terracotta head fragment depicting the iconic smiling "Sonriente" figure of Classic Veracruz culture. Features a broad grin, almond-shaped eyes, and an elaborate cylindrical headdress with finely incised geometric decoration. These expressive figures are closely associated with ritual ceremonies, dance, fertility, and renewal in Gulf Coast Veracruz. Hollow construction with an open back, consistent with ancient firing techniques. Attractive burial deposits and excellent preservation of facial expression and carved details. Mounted on a modern black metal stand and fitted with a copper wire for optional wall display. Condition: Minor surface wear consistent with age and burial. Stable hairline stress crack across the lower left eye. Provenance: Ex Abell Auction, Los Angeles, California. Ex Important Private Southern California Estate.
