A striking portrait piece with unmistakable old-world presence, this antique porcelain cabinet plate features Queen Louise of Prussia in a finely rendered central portrait, traditionally associated with the “Königin Louise nach Richter” image. The softly shaded portrait is surrounded by luminous cobalt blue that has the rich, slightly fluid appearance associated with flow blue decoration. The elaborate border makes this plate especially memorable. Deep cobalt panels, intricate gilt filigree, raised scrolling details, and a dramatically scalloped rim create an ornate frame around the portrait. Generous gold embellishment along the shaped edge shows areas of age-related wear, giving the piece the character expected of an antique display plate. The unmarked white porcelain reverse shows overall crazing consistent with age. Similar German and Bavarian portrait plates were popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
