A wonderful example of traditional French Quimper pottery, this hand-painted bowl brings together the colorful folk imagery and unmistakable Breton character for which Quimper ceramics are loved. The unusual faceted bowl rises from a coordinating footed base and is decorated inside and out. At its center, a Breton couple in traditional dress stands among stylized garden plantings beneath tiny birds in flight. Around the scalloped rim, saturated cobalt blue and rosy red flowers mingle with fresh green foliage, with the same lively decoration repeated along the pedestal base. Additional Breton figures appear around the exterior, giving the piece visual interest from every side. The warm ivory ground and freely painted details give it the wonderfully collected, artisanal quality associated with Quimper ware.
